Host a Fundraiser

Another great way you, your friends, family, co-workers, community groups or clubs can support HFLF is by holding your own fundraiser. These events might include auctions, golf tournaments, fun runs, school fundraisers, denim/casual days, penny drives, office fundraisers, trivia nights or any other fun idea you have. If you would like to hold a fundraiser for HFLF contact Carol Liess at 310-337-7417 x21 for help in getting started.

Athletic Events & Challenges

Are you participating in an endurance event or other challenge event? If so, you can support HFLF in the next 5K, 10K, half marathon, marathon, triathlon, cycling event, mud run, color run, etc. Click on our link below and create your own HFLF fundraising page, then email friends, family, co-workers, etc. and ask them to support your efforts on behalf of HFLF.

In-Kind Donations

In-kind donations are gifts of specific goods or services, rather than cash. Your donation of any of the items below would be greatly appreciated. Items that are especially needed include:

Ashtabula Homes

HFL Ashtabula Homes is a new construction, 21 unit apartment building for residents who are able to live in an independent living environment with supportive services. This development is located in Pasadena, California and opened its doors on October 15, 2003.

The apartments contain one bedroom, living and dining area, full kitchen, bath, and are fully furnished. There’s a secured entry, visitor’s lounge, community and activity room, laundry, landscaped garden area, and marked parking.

Residents pay 30% of their adjusted gross income for rent. Residents are responsible for their own phones and utilities.

A part-time residential manager is responsible for routine maintenance. A qualified case manager meets with residents and assists them with locating community resources to meet individual program needs.

Athena Homes - Almansor House, Fairview House, Monterey Apartments

HFL Athena Homes is a clustered Transition-Age-Youth (TAY) housing program located in Alhambra and San Gabriel, California. The program was developed in collaboration with the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health, the County Department of Children and Family Services, and the County Community Development Commission. The program serves 18 residents ages 18 to 21. The first two sites opened on December 1, 2002, and the third site opened on April 1, 2003. Residents are emancipated youth from the foster care system. During their two year program, residents benefit from an extensive array of services and life skills training to assist them in preparing for independent living or structured living environments.

Birch Grove Apartments

HFL Birch Grove Apartments is located in Norwalk, California on the grounds of Metropolitan State Hospital, adjacent to HFL Cedar Street Homes and HFL Elm Street Apartments. It opened its doors on March 21, 2007. Birch Grove was rehabilitated from a vacant historical building into 20 studio apartments for homeless persons with mental illness.

The apartments are fully furnished, with living room/ bedroom area and bath. There is a shared kitchen and dining area. There’s a guard gate at the main entry, visitor’s lounge, laundry, landscaped outdoor area, and marked parking.

Residents pay 30% of their adjusted gross income for rent. Residents are responsible for their own phone and utilities.

HFL Birch Grove Apartments was awarded the Southern California Association of Non-Profit Housing (SCANPH) Project of the Year Award in the Special Needs Category for 2007. Birch Grove also received the 2008 National Award of Merit from the National Association of Housing & Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO).

Buchanan House

Buchanan House is located in a quiet, safe residential area of Highland Park. The group home has been successfully operating since January of 1989, offering permanent housing and a program of semi-independent living.

Buchanan House is designed to serve six residents in single bedrooms with shared common spaces. There are numerous amenities nearby, including shopping, restaurants, and public transportation.

A part-time residential manager is responsible for routine maintenance. A qualified case manager meets with residents and assists them with locating community resources to meet individual program needs. Residents are also encouraged to attend weekly house meetings.

Residents pay 30% of their adjusted gross income for rent. Residents are responsible for their own phones and low cost utilities are shared.

Cedar Street Homes

HFL Cedar Street Homes is located in Norwalk, California on the grounds of Metropolitan State Hospital, adjacent to HFL Birch Grove Homes and HFL Elm Street Homes. Cedar Street was rehabilitated from a vacant, historical building into a transitional, or step down, state licensed 38-bed residential facility for homeless mentally ill adults. It opened its doors on July 11, 2005.

Homes for Life entered into a long-term lease with the State Department of Mental Health for use of the building, and by the end of the lease will have assisted thousands of residents in transitioning into long-term, community based housing. Residents are provided a full range of social and life skills training and services during their stay to assist them in preparing for less structured living environments.

HFL Cedar Street Homes was awarded the Southern California Association of Non-Profit Housing (SCANPH) Project of the Year Award in the Transitional category for 2005. HFL Cedar Street Homes also received the 2008 National Award of Merit from the National Association of Housing & Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO).

Denker House

Denker House is a 9-bed, state licensed (facility license 198202233) residential home located in the Harbor Gateway area of Los Angeles, California near the Harbor UCLA Medical Center. It opened its doors on February 1, 1999 to serve residents requiring rehabilitative services and 24/7 care and supervision.

The home consists of both double and single bedrooms. There are large family and living room areas, a full kitchen, full dining room, bathrooms, and landscaped front and backyard patio areas for recreation and socialization.

Residents pay the state licensed board and care rate, which includes rent, food, services, and utilities. Residents are offered services such as occupational therapy, outings, softball games, and access to a local gym. A full-time, live-in house manager is on site 24 hours per day, and case managers visit the home on a regular basis. Physicians and a nurse also regularly visit the home.

Elm Street Apartments

HFL Elm Street Apartments is located in Norwalk, California on the grounds of Metropolitan State Hospital, adjacent to HFL Cedar Street Homes and HFL Birch Grove Apartments. It opened its doors on March 14, 2007. Elm Street was rehabilitated from a vacant historical building into 14 studio units for homeless mentally ill persons, and one one-bedroom manager’s unit.

The units are fully furnished, with living room and bedroom area. There is a shared kitchen, dining area and bathrooms. There’s a guard gate at the main entry, visitor’s lounge, laundry, landscaped outdoor area, and marked parking.

Residents pay 30% of their adjusted gross income for rent. Residents are responsible for their own phone.
